NOTES FROM THE LAST SCCA MEETING

The October meeting focused on crime awareness and pre-vention, with guest speaker Lt. Phyllis Clair of the Travis County Sheriff's Office. If you need help getting information about a case, or dealing with the Sheriff's office on other issues, you should call her at 473-9257 (FAX 473-4289). Jim Folmer, one of our Leander Hills residents who was present, said she had been helpful with him. Lt. Clair discussed how they could help with many of our community programs and activities, from loaning chippers for cleanups to helping find counseling services. One of the more interesting discussions centered around the possibility of a neighborhood council to deal with minor juvenile problems by assigning community service or counseling.

Fire Marshal Richard Gaston spoke about recent fires (see Crime Watch), and he advised reporting vacant trailers as fire or health hazards. For more info, contact the Texas Commission on Fire Protection, Public Information Section, P.O. Box 2286, Austin, TX 78768-2286, ph. 918-7100.

We covered other topics as well, from Jack Calhoun's cows being loose due to the recent heavy rains, to the possibility of having a local flu clinic next fall. The rains and flooding at the Big Sandy low-water crossing brought out some concerns about how the Sheriff's office handled the barricading. There was some confusion about exactly what did happen, so if you, or someone you know, were actually turned around after crossing the water and told by an officer to go back across, you should call Lt. Clair.

The meeting was well-attended, and we thank everyone who took time out from their evenings to join us.
